I am running into a very similar problem (see my post at https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/android-developers/el37eByuVb8/discussion), and I was wondering if you could post any details about your workaround? How did you split up the image, what size tiles did you use, etc? Did it actually end up solving your problem?
