I forgot to add that accessing bluez directly is only possible from native code, which is not officially supported by official system images like the one on the G1.
For "normal" applications, we provide a Java Bluetooth API wrapping bluez, but which currently covers only a small subset of the stack. Hopefully, this should expand progressively as time goes, though I have no ETA for new related features.
