There is an app in the market now (texteasy) that fixes this.

Gives a list of contacts (or groups!) and you just check/uncheck them, then
it kicks off the standard sms app to do the sending. Its perfect for this.
(I haven't actually sent anything with it but I did do a basic test and it
worked great.)
