I don't quite understand what you're asking. By "direct connection" do you mean on the phone or over the web?
JSON is a valid (and pretty good) way to represent data regardless of where it is or how it's being transmitted -- much more efficient to generate and parse than XML, better integration with Java and C++, and more "humane" for human reading/editing. If your intent is to replace a direct DB-query-over-the-web setup with one that's a bit more "arms length", you still need a way to represent the data transmitted.
