For some reason, if you set the brightness to 0f, it really turns the screen off rather than just making it as dark as possible. Worse, after you do that, you can't turn the screen on again.
To change the brightness, stay with a value from 0.05 to 1.0. That seems to work as expected. There's no API to turn the screen off (to my knowledge). To turn the screen on, use a wake lock.
