Hi Carlo, Take a look in the source code of JPEGImageReaderSpi <http://www.docjar.org/html/api/com/sun/imageio/plugins/jpeg/JPEGImageReaderSpi.java.html> and PNGImageReaderSpi <http://www.docjar.org/html/api/com/sun/imageio/plugins/png/PNGImageReaderSpi.java.html> (j2se).
These classes have a method called canDecodeInput that checks if an inputstream is a png or jpeg (respectively).
