Hi mystic-d, This may help http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/content/Intent.html#DATA_CONNECTION_STATE_CHANGED_ACTION So you can listen for intents to know when you're connected, connecting or disconnected.
Alternatively, you can periodically ping the network.
