I'm feelling like a real newbie here. I'm finally getting around to
working on some ubuntu servers. I did not install or configure ubuntu,
but I do have an admin account and the cooperation of the person who did
install them.
My Amanda server is Solaris 9 on SPARC, and all the backups I've done
thus far have been with Solaris tools, fssnap, ufsdump, etc. This is my
first attempt at ubuntu. I have Amanda 2.5.1p3 on the server. I checked
aptget and found that the ubuntu package was 2.5.1p1. So, rather than
take that or jump to 2.6.x, I just transferred my source over from the
Amanda server and built it. I used --with-user=amanda
--with-group=amanda --without-server --without-ipv6 --with-ssh-security.
Everything went smoothly. I followed a similar procedure to what I've
done setting up other Solaris clients, setting up .amandahosts entries,
opening /etc/hosts.allow, touch /etc/amandates, ssh back and forth to
get known_hosts, and copy authorized_keys. I saw that /etc/services
already had entries for amanda.
Then I set up my entries in amanda.conf and the disklist and ran an
`amcheck daily`.
Watching auth.log on the ubuntu client, I see it accepting the key for
amanda. However, nothing is ever noted in /tmp/amanda.
On the server, I get
mormyrid:/usr/local/etc/amanda/daily:amanda$ amcheck daily

I'm seeing a couple of things here. One is that the shared object file
error appears when I try to use the linux gnutar dump type. The other is
that I'm getting an EOF back from morrill-auth. Am I going to need to
recompile Amanda on my server to get some feature that wasn't included
when I originally set it up? I'm using wrappers for ufsdump. But it
shouldn't be asking for anything on the server, it should be calling the
ubuntu server and asking it to do its thing.
I also noticed that xinetd is not installed on the ubuntu server. Since
I'm unfamiliar with either ubuntu or xinetd, I'm puzzled why it wasn't
installed by default if it is needed to launch the services that are in
/etc/services by default.
Sorry if this seems a bit scattered. I'm way late getting out of here today.
TIA
