I can verify that GNUtar works wonderfully for backing up what is
approaching fifty IRIX clients, including several very large Origins.
One thing to be careful of is that you have installed GNUtar 1.13.25 on
your IRIX systems in somewhere like /usr/local. The GNUtar which comes
with the IRIX freeware distribution is v1.13 and is not suitable for use
with amanda. Once you've got 1.13.25 compiled and installed make sure
that you specify the path to it at configure time with the --with-gnutar
option. By default configure will likely either find the outdated
/usr/freeware binary or worse yet the IRIX tar in /sbin, which most
definitely won't work with amanda.
