Which version of amanda are you using? This sound very much like my problem which SEEMS to have been fixed in the upgrade from amanda-2.4.2p1 amanda-2.4.2p2 - there was a comment in the change log about increasing the size of a buffer. Perhaps someone with more technical knowlege can confirm/refute this.
