mmh... well, if it is some bug introduced with some kernel security fix,
as a possible workaround you may try to use the new 2.6.24 "etchnhalf"
kernel introduced with the latest Etch "dot" release.
(you'll also get a newer ALSA and a great many new features with it as
an extra bonus... :-)
