I've had similar problems with my on board sound, USB external sound devices
work well. It seemed to be more of a problem with the gstreamer framework
being borked with ubuntu than anything else. If I remember, I will back up
my anecdotal quip with evidence from the ubuntu forums and launchpad issues
I've raised and viewed.
