Basically, what I want to do is this: use mplayers channel routing
and generating features to add "fake" extra channels (e.g. by
mapping the l/r to the rears). That works great for analog output,
but not for sp/dif, that still only sees 2 channels.
AFAIK the only way to get more than 2.0 channels through a sp/dif
link is by wrapping them up in a (lossy) AC3 encoded stream.
It's just not very setisfactory to have a 5.1 capable audio device
that only delivers 2.0 channels to the amp unless your source data
is already properly encoded.
So I am looking for a way to take all the channels - regardless of
whether they actually contain data or only silence - that the card
supports (5.1 that is) and wrap them in an AC3 stream in real time
to send that out via optical sp/dif to my amp.
Regards,
Phil
