Well,

I had exactly this problem with the alsa 1.0.2 series, maybe you have an old 
version of alsa-lib or alsa-driver floating around? The driver version can be 
checked via "cat /proc/asound/version", you should have 1.0.3 or 1.0.4 (both 
verfied to work with the nforce2).
