G'day mate!
Did you have any config probs under gentoo? I've had a
few quirks under debian with the file hierarchy and
all. Anyway, I usually just use a program like kmix,
set it to the volume settings I prefer, save the
current volume as the default and everytime a program
changes it, fire up kmix and click on 'restore default
volumes", kinda annoying sometimes, but does the trick
for me.
