you need to pass 8 interleaved samples.
the hardware itself can do separate DMAs for each stereo channel, but
this feature is not implemented of the driver.
if there is any strong request and reason, i'll rewrite the code.

you have to set up the IEC958 status bits correctly with the matching
sample rate, etc.  yes, this is annoying.  we'll need to improve this
area, too.
