I have the same AC97 digital controller.
intel8x0 driver works for me.
There is definitely something wrong with your configuration.
the lsmod output shows that the driver was loaded fine for you there.
It was able to talk to the controller.
what is the sequence of steps in installing and loading the driver?
You may want to run alsaconf to configure the whole alsa stuff.
