Well, you have to unmute and raise the volume of the CD channel of course.
The most likely cause of the problem though is a missing cable from the
analog out on the back of your CD-ROM to your soundcard. Some versions
of Windows use digital audio extraction: data is taken from the drive using
the IDE cable and digital -> analog conversion is done in the soundcard.
Alsaplayer does the same in Linux.
