The center channel on the SB Live is the one that doubles as the S/PDIF
output. I think it is producing the digital signal; if I plug it into an
analog connection on my receiver, I get that buzzing sound as well. Try
toggling the digital option in alsamixer. (The last one there. It looks
like a slider but isn't. Mute it.)
How did you get analog surround to work? I've got digital output working
and the front analog, with no arguments to aplay. I'm trying to get
surround working, like this:
$ aplay -D cards.pcm.surround51 2.wav
Playing WAVE '2.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
aplay: set_params:764: Channels count non available
Other options (cards.pcm.iec958) give the same thing, even though it
produces digital output fine without me specifying anything.
It's a bit silly to play a mono file in surround sound, but it should
work, right? If not, I suppose I can try with the DVD software, which is
the point of this in the end.
