I can't help you on your VIA onboard problem (I have a VIA chipset but my onboard audio is the C-Media 8738 or something, using the snd-cmipci driver. I'm currently using a PCI Ensoniq AudioPCI as it sounds a lot better than the onboard crap.). I can attest to the fact that I never could get my ISA SB AWE64 working with my VIA board. Probably a VIA bug or something. ALSA refused to acknowledge the card even exists (isapnp did configure it properly), but the kernel's OSS/Free modules acknowledged the card's existance, however when I go to play something it plays a small blip and then locks up. Fortunately I had this Ensoniq AudioPCI-97 ES1373 card and the snd-ens1371 module supports it. If the VIA onboard sound is anything like my onboard C-Media chipset, I'd suggest buying a PCI soundcard like an SB Live or something. But if you're not picky then I wish you luck. _______________________________________________________________ Hundreds of nodes, one monster rendering program. Now that's a super model!
