I got an error message - this is quite exciting - until now I just had
silently failing programs.

I realised that there was a program installed (yes, by me!) arecord.

This I thought was great, and after maning it, executed the following command:

root@client:~# arecord -f cd testa.wav -d=12
Recording WAVE 'testa.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Stere
arecord: pcm_read:1049: read error: Input/output error

No result on google.

Noone is ever in #alsa on opn, and I have been fighting this a while now -
any suggestions welcomed.
