First I would like to say thanks to the ALSA team for their excellent work.
But, I do have an (hopefully) interesting question: It seems that when I am running an audio application, such as Xine or XMMS, I cannot start another application that uses the audio system (even if it doesn't directly play any sound). For example, when I am listening to some MP3's with XMMS set to use the OSS plugin, I cannot start Mozilla (which contains the Real Audio plugin). When I start Mozilla, nothing happens, until I either stop the XMMS playback or close the app, then, low and behold, Mozilla pops up. I am thinking that this is because the first app has the sound system locked. This happens with either XMMS playing or Xine playing (XINE is using native ALSA support) and I try to start Mozilla or RealPlayer itself. Is there a way to make the sound devices "shareable" without using a brain-dead daemon like esd or arts (arts seems to cause other lockout issues)???? I am not looking to mix sound sources like some people on the list have requested, I just want to be able to start a web browser when XMMS or Xine or something is running in the background.
