Hi. I don't have a mic recommendation, but a "powered mic" is one that requires
an external power source, not the computer -- such as an amplifier-- for its
power.

Subject: [all-audio] Explanation needed

Because I am looking to purchase a new or used microphone, I need an
explanation so that I know exactly what I am looking for.

First, I do not wish a USB mike, not because I think they aren't good; rather,
I hate the fact that as soon as you plug in a USB mike, it seems to change the
sound card settings.

I know that some mikes are characterized as not powered meaning I guess that
they require power from an external source, presumably from the computer. When
we used tape recorders, there apparently was not that distinction, so I assume
they did not require external power.

So what I am looking for is a mike with a 3.5 mm. stereo plug which derives its
power from the computer and which has good but not excellent high frequency
response. I would prefer a microphone rather than a head set.

I am not necessarily looking for recommendations as to what to look for and
what to avoid.

Thanks.

Don Roberts
