Dave, To my ears, this sounds like a monaural sound so it likely is the same on both channels, so using one channel or the other probably won't make much difference. Second, this noise seems to me to be pretty broad band, or at least it likely is strongest in the same frequency range that contains the information that makes speech intelligible. I don't think filtering by frequency is going to be very effective.
Is this noise always there, does it repeat often, or is it a one-time sound? Replacing the noise with silence might be the best bet, although deleting the noise might also work unless it affects the rhythm of the rest of what is being recorded. If the sound is tinny, as you described it, it would seem you are not limiting the effects you are trying to the duration of the noise itself. This noise is so loud that I don't think you will be able to apply anything to the entire recording to get rid of it. Still, if you can describe whether this sound is constant, repeats often, or just happens a few times, that might influence what one might do.
