Well..mine only had the one battery in there, so that's what I put in; just one 
battery!

Yes, the battery is two AAA cells.  I couldn't get mine set up to charge 
so I've been using normal alcoline cells.  And it's been so long now, I 
can't remember where I put the rechargeable cells.
