Thank you to those who listened to my recording and offered suggestions. It turns out that some noise cancelation setting was on by default for the microphone. Turning it off removed the artifacts.
This of course brings me to a question about the existence of any affordable noise cancelation apps. When I used to use Goldwave, I wasn't very happy with the noise cancelation, but that was an older version and I may not have tried hard enough to optimize it. Sound Forge was known for its noise cancelation, but I don't own it any more. Are there any other candidates?
