It was the same BASIC engine as the MG's, the 1500cc BMC B-block from
the Austin A55 (after the first year, when they used the under-one-liter
A block from the A40). Many enthusiasts were quick to catch on that an
actual MG engine was a fairly easy swap-in, giving about a 30%
horsepower increase. Having driven a couple of these things with just
the original 40hp or so, I think I'd want to do a lot of work on the
underpinnings first and add power later! I've driven a lot of biggish
cars that felt a lot smaller once they got going; these are the only
little cars I know of that feel like they get BIGGER. You're driving a
clown car, and then suddenly it's a '49 Buick!
