They make us do this two level T profile cut. Those seem to stand up if the
roadbase under it is the right stuff and compacted properly.

I guess it wouldn't matter to you but once you cut asphalt whomever is
responsible to repair that street will have to tend to those spots every year.
It never is the same once cut.

I've been contracting it out for half that. Kinda makes running a drill
yourself less attractive.

I let contracts and collect competitive bids for this all the time. I
have not seen HDD below $13.50 in the past 3 years around here.

The ARRA funded project by me was $7/foot for installation and I thought
that was high. ;-)

You really ought to consider directional drilling. Really cuts down on
clean up and road repair. Contractors will do it for about $15/foot. Or just
go rent one from Ditch Witch for a week or so. They will even do some of it
for you for free during the demo phase in hopes you will buy the machine.

Yeah, they blow it it... into existing conduit.

We are finalizing plans to put fiber throughout a business park and
there 9 locations where we are planning on crossing private “roads” to connect
the builldings with conduit (aerial not an option). Its asphalt in 8 of the 9
spots, and the plan was to cut the asphalt (pretty sure our ditchwitch will go
right through it) go down about 36” fill it in and have the local “asphalt
dude” seal it up.

I met with the “superintendent” for the park and he said “Why don’t you
just blow the conduit in?” I laughed at first but he insisted it’s a “thing”.
Says AT&T does it all the time. My only thought is directional boring, and he
insisted No, that they “blow it in”. Of course I assume directional boring
costs (sub contracting) would cost be a lot more than just cutting through the
asphalt, thus my plan.

I don’t want to chase my tail so am seeking enlightenment.

        “blowing in conduit” ???
