As others have said, and with your known aversion to Apple products, the Surface Pro is exactly what you are looking for.

If you go the iPad route... you will need/want the Pro version.  Apple makes a keyboard that is a cover that I actually really like.  I'd spring for the pencil as well - for things like SolidWorks you will probably really enjoy it.

On the 11" vs 12.9" I go with the smaller one personally... but to each their own.  Go to the Apple Store in SLC and give them a try.

BTW, there is an Apple event tomorrow which may announce new hardware but it is unlikely on the iPad line.  They will probably be talking about and giving the launch date for iPadOS which lots of people have been waiting for (including me).

She has several iPads so if I want tech support from her I better stick with her brand of smokes.

You just described a laptop.

Also, does it have to literally be an iPad, i.e. an Apple product?  Or just a tablet?  My son has some sort of Android tablet.  You could get something like a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6.

Or if size is the only issue, get a compact laptop. Dell XPS 13 is nice.  By the time you add a cover and a physical keyboard and mouse to a tablet, it walks and quacks like a laptop.  You wouldn’t want to leave it on the train though.

*Subject:* [AFMUG] OT iPad question

My wife is busy (for months) planning some travel for this fall.  She told me I am not taking my laptop.  Too big, too heavy etc etc.  (I actually left it on a train at Heathrow once, had enough time to go catch that same train and found it.)But I digress.

She says I can have an iPad.  I acquiesce due to the fact that she micro manages these trips and I don’t have to do a thing.  She likes it that way and I like it that way.  I just go where I am told to go and I pay.  She makes sure I have clean clothes and the proper tickets needed for travel as well as hotel rooms.  It is actually pretty wonderful.  She teams up with my UK son-in-law as he is like this too.

But again, I digress.

I know almost zero about iPads.  I need a human size keyboard.  Hopefully one with keys that physically move.  I would like to be able to plug in an HDMI monitor too.  Mouse?

Dear Borg, what are my options?
