I just ran into this bug with studio 0.5.8. I created a simple gradle-based project with 'android create project -g -v "0.10.+" ...', and then imported it into Android Studio.
With just a single build.gradle file in the root directory, I would get the NullPointerException when I opened the project structure. Creating an empty settings.gradle file eliminates the problem. However, the reason I was going into the project structure is to try to fix the "Cannot resolve symbol 'R'" error in the editor according to these instructions: http://stackoverflow.com/a/16588886 Creating settings.gradle gives me the Dependencies tab, but there is no Sources tab. Seems like it should be possible to "android create project ..." and then import into the Studio without all of these problems.
