MTNL launches Internet telephony

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), which operates in Delhi
and Mumbai circles, on Friday launched Internet telephony by utilising its
broadband network.

It offers subscribers a call rate of Re. 1 per minute for international calls
made to the U.S., the U.K., Russia, Hong Kong, Canada, Australia and other
countries.
Four-in-one facility

“MTNL has tied up with Aksh Optifibre to offer Netfone, a Voice over Internet
Protocol (VoIP) service.

MTNL subscribers, having broadband connections, will be able to make
international calls just like making calls from a normal telephone without the
need
of a personal computer,” said MTNL Chairman and Managing Director, R. S. P.
Sinha.

“MTNL will now be providing a four-in-one facility on a single landline
connection — a normal telephone service, Internet, VoIP phone and IPTV
simultaneously.
This facility will also be available to all MTNL PCO holders,” said Mr. Sinha.
Registration

According to Aksh Optifibre Managing Director, Kailash Choudhari, “We will
invest Rs. 110 crore in VoIP service in the next three years.”

About tariffs, MTNL (Delhi) Executive Director, A. K. Arora, said the service
would be available to about 150 countries.

“Subscribers opting for the service will have to pay Rs. 500 as registration
and installation charges.
