I initially tried the NVDA approach with NVDA+shift+c, but this
merely inserts the letter "c" in the column. This is a spreadsheet
shared between my wife and I on Google Drive. She then converted
it to a table, using MS Excel, but despite having the relevant
options enabled under NVDA document settings, the column headers
are not announced my end, using Calc. The obvious next step would
be to go the route of setting the headers in Excel itself, which
hopefully will do the trick.

Might I ask if you were using NVDA's method with the commands NVDA +
Shift + C (for the column header row) and NVDA + Shift + R (for the row
header column) marking, or were you specifying these in Excel itself?
I'm really not certain if the NVDA-based technique for designation in Excel
will work, the analogous method of denoting header rows/columns in the
spreadsheet itself will work, or neither works with Calc.
