Since Pango is practically the foundation of international text
rendering in Gnome2, wouldn't it make sense to assume that any issues
will (have to) be solved?

Since many others are going to encounter the same hurdles, we don't get
into a position where we have to solve the *hard* parts. It usually
makes sense to piggy-back on the work of others...
