Rock Of Ages
If I were to read the title of this piece, my mind may
immediately conclude that I have a need to feel good, throw my hands
up in the air, shout out, and start singing Hosanna. I do not make
light of such. Any connection to, or with, God is most sacred and
priceless. But … That is not what this piece is about. This piece is
about a one word question.
There was, and still, places on this planet named Earth that
remain free from the duties, doctrine, and dogma of what is loosely
called religion. Their are people of such societies, who come and go,
love and hate, grieve and revel, live and then die, much like you and
I. They have no technology beyond their own. Yet somewhere they
consider sacred, you will find a rock. That rock may take on any
shape imaginable. It may be a bird, it may be a human, or a bird
human. The rock may be precise and detailed leaving no doubt of their
conveyance. It may be vague and sketchy. The rock may convey a
feeling of awe and fear, or love and security. Yet for most, it is a
sacred rock.
The rock by its nature instilled an expectation of permanence and
longevity. A message to those who find it long after their own bones
turn into the dust of the winds. The rock was still, yet it spoke to
them. The rock did not move, yet was manifest everywhere in reality,
but especially in their dreams. The rock was a guide, a guard, a
place to gather, a place to grieve, a place to go in times of trouble,
and a place to offer a gift. The rock was the center of the village
however large, however small. The rock was deified by most, mystified
by many, and marginalized by some. Then there were those who hated
the rock. They hated the rock, because it was a rock, and saw it as
nothing more nor nothing less.
They have never heard the word Adonai, Jeshua, Buddha, Mohammad, or
Krishna. They have never been to temple, church, monastery, or
mosque. They only know of the rock. They have no Torah, Bible,
Tripitaka, Qu’ran, or Vedas. They have no television, radio,
telephone, internet, or satellite to either enhance or distract. All
they know is what is in side them. All they know is they seek. All
they know is they need. All they know is they want. There is no
complication of philosophical debate, or social antagonism. They
simply seek the rock. Therein lay the question . Why?
