i have seen that some ati cards are not happy with some modes.
you may wish to try cinap's realemu which is at

        9fs atom # srv $nflag -q tcp!atom.9atom.org atom &&
                #   mount $nflag /srv/atom /n/atom atom
        /n/atom/plan9/386/bin/aux/realemu

if realemu is run before aux/vga, you may have better luck.
some bioses allow one to set the amount of video memory.
that might be worth checking, too.
