you can do private repos on github for free.  there are other servies that
do free private repos.  i'm pretty sure gitlab does free private repos, too.
if you're a google apps user you can use google cloud project repos.  those
are no extra charge.
paying for a git service gets to be sticky because they are all different.
 if it's just you, or OSS is fine, then a free one will do.  once you get
more than just you, and you want the repos to be private, you have to start
researching.  what if you want someone on the team to be able to fork the
repo and do PR's, but not directly push to the repo?  what if you want
workflow rules on commits?  code reviews?  the services have subtle things
that you have to pay attention to.
there are a bunch of guis for git, most of them are free-or-freeish.  i
know people using many of them.  there does not seem to be a consensus on
which one is best.  i personally like gitkraken.
